Frankfurt Book Fair Literacy Campaign (LitCam)
Education for all ensures a better future for all. In 2006, the Frankfurt Book Fair created a new key focus called “Education for the Future”. The idea of “LitCam” (Frankfurt Book Fair Literacy Campaign) was also developed within the context of this key focus.
As the largest book and media fair worldwide, the Frankfurt Book Fair not only organises the eponymous trade fair, but also takes responsibility for the promotion of reading, writing and basic education, as well as media literacy.
With 7,200 exhibitors from 100 countries at the Fair every year, the international expansion of LitCam came naturally. Besides increasing literacy in developing countries, tackling functional illiteracy in industrialised countries is also an important mission of LitCam.
With the name LitCam (Literacy Campaign), the Frankfurt Book Fair has committed itself to the meaning of the word literacy. The word encompasses more than only literacy and basic education, it also implies the acquiring of life skills, another important goal of the Frankfurt Book Fair Literacy Campaign.
LitCam is thereby not only committed to the goals of its co-operation partner UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning but also to the UNESCO Millennium Development Goals and, respectively, those of “Education for All” (EFA).
LitCam objectives:
- To promote international cooperation and networking in the fields of literacy and basic education (e.g. LitCam Conferences)
- To inform important decision makers and the general public about the topic (e.g. at public events)
- To develop collaborative projects with participating partners
- To develop and implement self-initiated projects (e.g. “Football Meets Culture”)

Reading and Learning Rooms
As a large portion of the population of South Africa does not participate in the Cape Town Book Fair’s activities, LitCam and the fair organisers planned to build up and support Reading and Learning Rooms in the townships of Kayelitsha and Mfuleni. [more]
