Football meets Culture in Frankfurt (Karmeliterschule - Carmelite School)

16930_FTK FrankfurtThe “Football meets Culture” project was already in its fourth round in Frankfurt when it began again on 23 August 2010 at the Karmeliterschule – Carmelite School. Financing has been made possible thanks to the prize money received by our project “Football meets Culture” with the education award “Learning Kick-Off 2010”.
Children from Year 6 are taking part for their second year, plus six new players. The first group now consists of 18 children aged 12 – 13 and the second group includes 12 children aged 9 – 10. The Eintracht Frankfurt youth trainer, Anton Schumacher, trains twice a week with the children who then have special lessons with teacher Nicole Lange.
Subject matter in class is based on the children's needs and very often relates to football. As always, there are monthly cultural events. There has already been a trip to the Palmengarten – Botanical Gardens – and some children were even given the chance to come to the Frankfurt Book Fair and take part in an event.

LitCam launched the first “Football meets Culture” project in 2007 in Frankfurt, with start-up financing provided by the Aventis Foundation. The children were coached by trainers from the Eintracht Frankfurt football academy.
litcam_projekte_fussball_f1Two groups of 12 children and youngsters aged 7 – 10 and 10 – 13 were selected for the project at the Karmeliterschule in Frankfurt's main station district. The school's location in a part of town between the station and the red light district and with a very high proportion of immigrants demonstrated the importance of additional support for the children, so that better education gives them more confidence for the rest of their life.
litcam_projekte_fussball_f2To begin with, the children were able to take part directly at Easter in the Eintracht Frankfurt's football academy training camp. After that and through to the 2008 summer holidays, they were given two hours extra lessons and football training. There were also monthly cultural events, such as a visit to the Dialogmuseum and a rap poetry workshop.
Given its success, the project was continued in the school years 2008/09 and 2009/10, as well as now continuing in the current school year.
